My name is Aly. I am 18 years old, and I was born with Spina Bifida. A lot of times people ask me questions about why I do things differently.....The most common questions are "Why do you talk like that?" or "Why do you walk like that?". Most of the time it's younger kids that ask and I just say "Because I was born that way", but sometimes my peers ask me questions too. Up until I was about 14 I used to get mad because I thought my peers were picking on me, but my family helped me realize that it was because they thought I was hurt. So my goal is to raise awareness for everyone else with Spina Bifida and to let them know that if people ask questions it is most likely because they care. I would also like to let people know that just because some people do things differently doesn't mean they can't do things that everyone else can. People with Spina Bifida can get married, start families, play sports, and anything else they want to do.
